On Tuesday, 9th September, 2025, Matilda Aku Alomatu Osei-Agyeman had the opportunity to present to His Excellency, Alexander Van der Bellen, President of the Federal Republic of Austria, the Letters accrediting her as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Ghana to the Republic of Austria.
The Ambassador extended warmest greetings and best wishes from His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana. She was accompanied to the presentation ceremony by Mr. Paul K. Nana Sei Osei, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy.
President Alexander Van der Bellen warmly welcomed the Ambassador, congratulated her on her appointment and assured her of the support of the Austrian government to ensure a successful tour of duty. The President expressed satisfaction at the level of cooperation between the two countries and the Ambassador assured him of her determination to further strengthen and enhance the traditional close and friendly relations that exist between Ghana and Austria.
Ambassador Alomatu Osei-Agyeman called for enhancement of relations beyond the political to include concentration on the economic front, since bilateral trade volumes between the two countries, as at last year was around € 40 million, which needed to be increased.
The President was briefed about the transformation agenda of President Mahama’s Administration through the 24-hour economy policy which would provide huge opportunities for Austrian investors to consider critical sectors of Ghana’s economy and also reset the economic relations between our countries.
The Ambassador noted that the opening of the Austrian Embassy in Accra in 2024 would enhance people-to-people engagements and scholarships to Ghanaians, among others.
The Ambassador conveyed the Government of Ghana’s appreciation to the Government of Austria for the latter’s support over the years in infrastructure development.
On the multilateral front, the Ambassador commended the Government of Austria for putting forth its candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2027-2028 and assured of Ghana’s readiness to share experiences based on the latter’s own past tenure on the Council.
On issues in the subregion, the Ambassador highlighted the formidable leadership role being played by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama within the ECOWAS Sub-Region, particularly efforts to engage Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to effectively address security threats in the region.
PROFILE OF MATILDA AKU ALOMATU OSEI-AGYEMAN
Excellency Matilda Aku Alomatu Osei-Agyeman has been a career diplomat serving at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over twenty-five (25) years and has served in various positions at home and abroad assisting in both bilateral and multilateral issues in respect of Ghana’s Foreign Policy.
Matilda, who is also the Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations Agencies in Vienna, is currently the Chair of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.
Prior to taking up the role as Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Agencies in Vienna, Matilda was the Minister Plenipotentiary/Deputy Ambassador and Head of Chancey at the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana to the Italian Republic (2023-2024).
Matilda has also served in Ghana’s diplomatic Missions in London, Washington DC, Valletta, and Geneva.
She was the Director of the Europe and Candidatures Bureaux, respectively at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana (MFARI).
Other assignments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana included her role as the Deputy Chief of Protocol, Personal Assistant to the Chief Director of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assistant Director of the following bureaux: Multilateral Cooperation Bureau, Americas, Policy Planning and Research, as well as Information, Culture and Linguistic, respectively.
