Enhancing Transparency in the Funding of Political Parties, Candidatures for Elected Public Office and Electoral Campaigns On 13th October 2025, I had the honour to deliver opening remarks at the launch of a landmark joint draft resolution entitled “Enhancing Transparency in the Funding of Political Parties, Candidatures for Elected Public Office, and Electoral Campaigns” at the Vienna International Centre.
The resolution, co-initiated by Ghana, Albania, Mongolia, and Norway, marks a historic first under the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) , specifically addressing transparency in political finance, a cornerstone of democratic integrity and accountability.
Our initiative seeks to strengthen public trust in democratic institutions, promote ethical standards in public office, and uphold the rule of law. It reaffirms the global community’s longstanding commitment under Article 7(3) of UNCAC and builds on the 2021 UN General Assembly Special Session Political Declaration against Corruption.
Transparency in political party financing and the conduct of free and fair elections are fundamental to safeguarding constitutional democracy and ensuring that politics serves the public good, not private interests.
The resolution outlines practical steps, including independent oversight bodies, public disclosure mechanisms, restrictions on foreign and excessive private donations, and enhanced engagement of civil society and the media to help countries strengthen their systems for transparency and accountability in political finance.
I am deeply proud of Ghana’s leadership in advancing this important global initiative, which reflects our national commitment to good governance, electoral integrity, and anti-corruption reform.
