Matilda Alomatu Osei-Agyeman outlined Ghana’s collaboration with the Organisation including the establishment of the National Data Centre (NDC) in Ghana in February 2010 which has allowed the country to continue enhancing its national verification monitoring capabilities thereby contributing to the global effort in monitoring the testing of nuclear weapons around the world for disaster risk mitigation for a peaceful environment.
She informed the gathering about Ghana’s successful observation of the International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 26 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the participation of state signatories and Embassies in Ghana. I acknowledged that the maintenance of the International Monitoring Systems (IMS) network in all aspects is vital and reiterated our support for adequate planning for the IMS network sustainment, backed with the requisite corresponding funding for its facilities operation.
The Ambassador acknowledged the efforts by the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) of the CTBTO in conducting training exercises and capacity-building for developing countries with the aim of ensuring transparent and impartial scientific judgment and enabling every state signatory to form an independent opinion on the verification regimes.
In furtherance of Ghana’s commitment to the CTBT, the country has initiated outreach programs in all second cycle schools to educate the youth on Ghana’s stance on Nuclear Weapons based on signed and ratified Treaty.
As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the CTBT’s opening for signature this year, Ghana echoed the urgent calls for the remaining Annex 2 States to sign and/or ratify without further delay.
