On the margins of the 66th Session of Working Group B of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Preparatory Commission, Ghana had the distinct honour of organizing the Africa Regional Group’s commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) at the Vienna International Centre.
As a convenor, Ghana brought together African delegations and Experts , CTBTO leadership, and international partners to reflect on three decades of global commitment toward a world free of nuclear testing.
Four African experts from Ghana, Algeria, South Africa and Kenya, made presentations on the sustained partnership that each country and by extension region had derived from the CTBTO.
The event reaffirmed Africa’s unwavering dedication to the Treaty’s entry into force and underscored its critical role in strengthening international peace and security. As a continent committed to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, Africa continues to stand united in support of a safer and more secure world.
Marking this important milestone also served as a call to action. Africa remains a nuclear-weapons-free zone and reiterates its call on all remaining Annex 2 States to sign and ratify the Treaty to enable its entry into force.
Ghana was proud to organize and host this important commemoration in Vienna and appreciates all delegations and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization for joining in marking this milestone. The collective effort toward a nuclear-test-free world continues.
Our appreciation to the African group, chaired by my colleague, Ambassador Mohamed Nasr.
We remain grateful to the Executive Director of CTBTO, Dr. Robert Floyd, for his leadership and commitment as well as his team.
